TITHING IN THE NEW TESTAMENT PART 1

 Tope Abioye

The subject of tithing has been a major bone of contention in the body of Christ, some people believe tithing is an old testament practices and should not be practice in the new testament, some others also believe you have to tithe for God to bless you and if you don’t tithe God will send the devourer to eat up you blessing.
Just follow me in this series as we unveil the reality of tithing to you in the New Testament.
WHAT IS TITHE?
Tithe simply means “tenth part”, so to pay tithe simply means to give ten percent of your income to  the church.
IS PAYING OF TITHE A PRACTICE OF THE MOSIC LAW?
Now the new creation is not bounded by the laws of Moses, but the question now would be is paying of tithe a thing of the law. Let’s open our bibles
22  And this stone, which I have set for a pillar, shall be God's house: and of all that thou shalt give me I will surely give the tenth unto thee. Gen 28:22
Now this was Jacob talking, and we all know Jacob lived before Moses and the law. So this scripture shows us that tithing has been even before the law.
Another example because the bible says by the mouth of two or three is a word established. Let’s see Abraham the father of faith.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and wine: and he was the priest of the most high God.
19 And he blessed him, and said, Blessed be Abram of the most high God, possessor of heaven and earth:
20 And blessed be the most high God, which hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand. And he gave him tithes of all.
Gen 14:18-20
Abraham paid tithe to melchizedek the high priest of the most high God. The bible talks about the covenant been in existence 430 years even before the law. Gal 3:17.
So Abraham paid tithe even before the law.
WE PAY TIHE IN THE NEW TESTAMENT?
We already saw that tithing is a practice that existed even before the law. But the question will now be should paying of tithe be a New Testament practice.
1  For this Melchisedec, king of Salem, priest of the most high God, who met Abraham returning from the slaughter of the kings, and blessed him;
2  To whom also Abraham gave a tenth part of all; first being by interpretation King of righteousness, and after that also King of Salem, which is, King of peace;
3  Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God; abideth a priest continually.
4  Now consider how great this man was, unto whom even the patriarch Abraham gave the tenth of the spoils.
9  And as I may so say, Levi also, who receiveth tithes, payed tithes in Abraham.
10  For he was yet in the loins of his father, when Melchisedec met him.
11  If therefore perfection were by the Levitical priesthood, (for under it the people received the law,) what further need was there that another priest should rise after the order of Melchisedec, and not be called after the order of Aaron? Hebrews 7:1-4&9-11.
Remember we said Abraham paid tithe to melchisedec even before the law and now the writer of the book of Hebrews is making reference to it, this is to show you that that event was divinely orchestrated by God Himself.
WHO WAS MELCHISEDEC?
The bible says he was  king of Salem, priest of the most high God, Without father, without mother, without descent, having neither beginning of days, nor end of life; but made like unto the Son of God. So he was a type of Christ.
I want to say something here which most Christians may not agree with because it is different from what they’ve heard about melchisedec.
I think melchisedec had father and mother but what happened was that the records could not be found (I call it divine omittion), if you read verse 3 of Hebrews 7 in the amplified it reads “without [record of] father or mother or ancestral line”
There were prophets too in the book of Ezra that the records of their descents could not be found.
59  And these were they who came up from Tel-melah, Tel-harsha, Cherub, Addah, and Immer, but they could not show a record of their fathers’ houses or prove their descent, whether they were of Israel: Ezra 2;59
Melchisedec was a type of Christ, the era of the Leviticus priesthood is over and now we have an high priest forever in the order of  melchisedec.
So tithing is an old testament practice but it is also allowed in the new testament.
On our write up tomorrow we are going to be dealing more on the subject of tithing in the New Testament,
We are going to be answering questions like,
Am I cursed if I don’t pay tithes?
Do I need to pay tithe for God to bless me?
What is the purpose of paying tithes? And many more
Ask question in any area you feel you need clarity. GOD BLESS YOU
